The only way to score high is to get quick find bonuses, which you get for rapidly finding multiple items in a row. A good idea is to find three or four items before clicking on one, so that you can click them all in rapid succession.

While your hints are limited, using one doesn't penalize you whatsoever. Besides, you're able to restock in each level, so don't be afraid to use them!
